Dean TV Shoot Blows Off the Walls During Women’s Lacrosse Game

Broadcasting athletic games always has bumps and hurdles. However, nothing could anticipate what happened last Saturday during the women’s lacrosse game at Grant Field.
During the third quarter of Dean’s home matchup against UMaine Farmington, a large array of dark clouds began to loom across the sky. When I saw those clouds come our way, I knew we were in trouble.
Nate Merowitz was filming the game when the storm clouds showed what they were capable of. Expecting thunder and lightning, we got something worse: a squall storm. In a matter of seconds, strong wind gusts started blowing equipment everywhere. Equipment carts started rolling on their own, the canopy tent the broadcasters were underneath flew off the ground, and the camera that Nate was operating nearly fell. It seemed like things were starting to go out of control.
With no weights in place, I had to help the sports broadcasting team hold down the canopy tent while the broadcasters did their show. Myself and others each held down a corner of the tent, which left Nate on his own to film the rest of the game. I felt bad, because we agreed to make a 50/50 split in filming time. However, desperate situations required desperate measures, and the split ended up being 25/75.
After the squall’s first wave, the storm simmered into a consistent breeze with moderate strength. That meant I had to keep holding the tent down in case a strong force of wind came through. It was a tough process, with the tent moving on its own while the brisk wind gave me the chills. I felt worse for Nate, who was taking the heat of the wind on the donkey.
In the end, me and Nate were still able to complete a successful day of filming, with the women’s lacrosse team defeating the UMaine Farmington Beavers 13-11. I must applaud the team for being able to play in that cold weather, along with Nate Merowitz for picking up most of the weight during filming. I trained him early on, and he learned very quickly.
The next match for the women’s lacrosse team is at Regis College next Thursday at 7 PM. The livestream can be found here.
