The Battle of Buns; the Fast-Food war on chicken sandwiches

The world of fast food has been competitive for decades. The competition and debate about who has a better menu is never ending. The landscape of fast food seemed to change overnight when Popeye’s released their chicken sandwich in August of 2019. This sandwich almost broke the internet and everyone was rushing to their nearest Popeyes to try it.

There was an almost instant shortage of Popeye’s new item and this was thanks to the world wide web, which helped make this sandwich so popular. What may seem like just a new menu item has had a massive effect on the world of fast food.

Naturally with this new item people began to compare it to other fast food chicken sandwiches. Many fast food chains took this as a chance to throw their hats in the ring and many establishments released their own take on the sandwich. Brands who don’t normally specialize in sandwiches (like Taco Bell) have even started preparing to release their own kind of sandwich.

The “Taco-Like Chicken Sandwich” is exactly what it sounds like. It is a piece of fried chicken wrapped in a tortilla with sauce and pickles. This menu item is so out of character for the Mexican food brand, but it looks delicious and will for sure be worth trying.

McDonald’s has recently come out with three new chicken sandwich’s that have been added to their menu to try and join in on this craze. The sandwiches look great, and customers have the option of the original, spicy and deluxe version of the sandwich. Kentucky Fried Chicken has even taken it upon itself to experiment and reinvent their chicken sandwich to try and keep up with their new competition.

The company announced the “KFC Chicken Sandwich” which is revamp on their old sandwich the Crispy Colonel Sandwich. The company made a statement about replacing their old menu item by saying that the old sandwich was not “living up to our legacy as experts in fried chicken.” It is fair to say that this domino effect of new chicken sandwiches was probably started by the success of Popeye’s.
