FRANKLIN, MA, Dean College Bulldogs Football kicked off their season opener with a loss this Saturday against the Fitchburg State University Falcons at Lippert Field in the Longley Athletic Complex, with a final score of 12-0. This was the first victory for the Falcons since the 2022 season. This was also the first victory under Fitchburg’s new head, Izzy Abraham.
Fitchburg State University scored off a forty-yard reception and touchdown by Sahir Gomez, thrown by Rocky Marchitel in the first quarter. Then, backed up to their one-yard line on third down, the former Bulldog Devin Lebron threw a ninety-nine-yard touchdown pass to Emilio Cabey to extend their lead to twelve.
Defense:
The Bulldog’s defensive efforts kept Dean in the game throughout this matchup with three turnovers against the Falcon’s offense. One outstanding from the defense was a highlight reel behind the helmet interception by Freshman Defensive Back Amari Robinson. He was then rewarded with an entertaining tradition for the defense this season which includes the player awarded with the turnover heading the sideline bench press to get his reps in.
Offense:
Football is a game of inches; this was seen through this game for the Dean offense, as the run-heavy scheme got Dean within reach of scoring late in both halves. Unfortunately, both ended up stalling out, resulting in a turnover on downs. A bright spot on this offense was Freshman Running Back Casey Shrosphire, who, despite an underperforming offensive line for the majority of the game, was able to have multiple long runs for yardage on Dean's more promising offensive possessions.
The Bulldogs enter their bye week 0-1 but will be back at Lippert Field in the Longley Athletic Complex on September 21st at noon against Curry College.
