Some Dean students may want to become dancers later on, but the competitive nature of the major itself scares them away. The Fusion Flow Society, founded under President Zachary Garsson and Vice President Elianna Larnard, markets itself as an inclusive dance organization open to all students regardless of performing arts experience.
Unlike your average theatre production at Dean College, The Fusion Flow Society does not require auditions in order to become a member. “There’s no fear of judgement or rejection” Garsson states. “You can come in and get exactly what you want, which is the experience of dancing on stage and performing with others.”
When asked about his motivations for starting up the club, Garsson shared a story that some dance majors can relate to. “I had trouble in auditions, I wasn’t making it into anything, and doors were closing rapidly” says Garsson. “Instead of looking for a door to open for me, I decided to open one myself.”
A regular day with The Fusion Flow Society involves practicing “a series of choreography pieces” in the form of a dance group, dancing to various music artists like Usher and Taylor Swift. By the end of each school year, the club performs their pieces in dance showcases that are open to the public.
The Fusion Flow Society also plans to add dance masterclasses during their meetings, where “anybody and everybody” with prior dance experience “can come in and teach whatever they want,” according to Garsson. The organization is currently looking for a faculty member or dance student that could host these masterclasses.
The Fusion Flow Society will be performing at the Collaboration Showcase on March 30th; the location and time are TBA as of now. The club also hosts its own End-of-the-Year showcase on April 20th at 6 PM at the Guidrey Center, according to their official Instagram account.
As for meeting details, Fusion Flow Society VP Elianna Larnard stated that the club meets “every Sunday from 1 to 2 PM, and every Tuesday from 7 to 8 PM at the Campus Center Atrium.” The club also promises to be flexible with each member’s schedule in the event that a member has to miss practice.
