FRANKLIN—The Dean College Field Hockey team fell to St. Joseph’s Maine 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Grant Field. All three goals for St. Josephs came off the stick of Maya Waryas, whose first goal came off a rebound that just snuck by Dean goalkeeper Mackenzie Fillion. Waryas scored twice more in the game, giving her goals in the first three quarters, with all three being unassisted.
The storyline of this contest was about Megan Baker, the head coach of the Dean Bulldogs. She graduated from St. Joseph’s of Maine in 2019 and played under their coach, Rupert Lewis, who also named her a captain when she was with the Monks. Following the game, Baker said, “Coaching against my former undergrad coach is always an interesting battle. I bring things that I learned from him to my own coaching game for my current program, so the programs are similar in some manners. He is always trying to push me in every aspect still though, his mental game is very impactful."
Baker was also very pleased with how her defense played, only allowing three goals, notably behind the efforts of Mackenzie Fillion, who had six saves in the loss. Speaking on Dean's defense, Baker said, “My defense has been incredible, our back line has been a brick wall and just smart with every chance that we get."
Dean was unable to register a shot on the goal in the loss in part due to their youth on offense. Baker added, “Our offensive line will click, it is just so young and new. Offensively the biggest things to improve on are being cohesive with ball movement and just finishing the ball with strength on the net. We have already improved so much in the past month, opening our schedule with some tough teams. I cannot wait to see what is in store for my program and my student-athletes."
The Dean College Field Hockey team will be back in action on Thursday at Russell Sage College at 6:00, as they are still looking for their first win of the young season.
