The Dean College Bulldogs have hired Andrae Murphy as their new football head coach. Murphy graduated from Dean back in 2007 earning a degree in communications. Andrae also was an NJCAA All-American and won First Team All-Northeast Junior College honors as a defensive back here at Dean from 2005-2007. After departing from Dean, he went on to play football at Bridgewater State University where he was awarded First Team All-MASCAC and First Team All-New England honors as a defensive back/linebacker and helped them win the 2008 MASCAC championship.
“I am pleased to welcome back Andrae to the Dean College community as our next football head coach,” Athletic Director George Martin said. “Coach Murphy’s passion for Dean, our student-athletes and vision for the future of the program elevated him to the top of a very deep and talented pool of applicants. I am excited to bring Coach Murphy back home, and I look forward to seeing the impact of his leadership on our student-athletes, our athletic department and the entire campus community.”
“I am thrilled that we are welcoming a Dean Bulldog to lead our NCAA Division III Football program,” said Dean College President Paula M. Rooney. “Dre knows what it means to be a Bulldog and to live The Dean Difference. We are welcoming home an alumnus we are very proud of to lead our student-athletes to new academic and athletic success.”
“It’s an honor to be named the head coach of Dean College,” Murphy told the Franklin Observer. “I’d like to thank President Rooney and George Martin for giving me such an incredible opportunity to return home and lead this remarkable group of student-athletes. I owe so much to Dean College, and I am eternally grateful to serve the Dean Community in this capacity.”
Murphy previously served as the defensive backs coach at Columbia University for the past five seasons. Before Columbia, Murphy was at the College of Holy Cross where he oversaw the practices, scouting, recruiting and academic success.
Prior to Columbia, Andrae was the defensive quality control coach in 2016 at Florida Atlantic University as well as a defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Massachusetts Maritime Academy from 2014-2016. He also worked at the high school level as a defensive back coach at J.P. Travellia High School in Coral Springs, Florida from 2010-2011 and as a wide receivers coach at Everglades High School from 2009-2010.
Murphy also served in the United States Army as a combat infantry fire team leader from 2011-2015 where he won multiple Army Accommodation and Achievement medals, was a member of the top squad competition title, and was elected to the Army Green to Gold Leadership program.
The Pembroke Pines, Fla. native takes over a Bulldogs team that went 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference in 2021. Dean has a lot of returning skill players next season and will look to make a run at the conference title with some new players coming on board as well.
