PROVIDENCE, RI- The Dean College Bulldogs Mens Lacrosse team suffered a 12-11 loss to Johnson and Wales University Tuesday night at SMAC Athletic Complex.
The Bulldogs started hot scoring four unanswered goals. The scoring started with Senior Greg Centeio, who scored off an assist from Aidan McCarthy, which would be followed by a score from Alec Speirs. Speirs set up Diego Alvarez-Segee for his first strike of the game and then Speirs scored once more to give Dean a 4-0 lead. JWU managed to get on the board with three minutes remaining in the period to close the gap heading into the second quarter.
The second period was a very defensive battle, with no scoring from either team until there were four minutes left in the quarter. The Wildcats finally broke through Dean’s stubborn defense and scored to close the gap to 4-2. However, just as JWU started to build momentum, Alvarez-Segee scored two goals with a minute left to extend the lead to 6-2 going into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Wildcats did not give up and scored four goals in four minutes to tie the game 6-6. Dean answered quickly as Jason Richard scored three consecutive goals in under two minutes with help from Alvarez-Segee and Speirs who provided the assists. The closely contested quarter would continue when JWU scored with just six seconds left in the period to set the score at 9-7 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The final period of play saw both teams trade goals at two apiece. Alvarez-Segee was able to score first for Dean with an assist from Speirs. Ryan Clunie was the other Bulldog scorer who got his first tally off a pass from Richard to give Dean an 11-9 advantage. The game would end after the Wildcats scored two goals to send the game into overtime, where they would hit the game-winner with two minutes left in overtime.
This loss pushes Dean back to 7-4 overall, and they will host the Rivier Raiders Tuesday, April 19th, at Grant Field at 3:30 pm.
