ALFRED—The Dean College football team defeated Alfred State College 36-35 in overtime to get their first win of the season. This was also the first win for new head coach Andrae Murphy.
Bulldogs’ wide receiver Mozes Mooney started at quarterback again and finished 28-34 for 295 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Mooney also had two rushing touchdowns.
Senior wide receiver Quintus Reid led Dean in receptions with 11 for 152 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side, senior Tyzohn Poole led the Bulldogs with 10 tackles.
The game went back and forth the entire first half as it was tied at 21 at halftime. The game was scoreless in the third quarter but then picked up in the fourth.
The Pioneers took the lead, 28-21, when running back Jake Palmer had a 68-yard touchdown run.
The Bulldogs scored towards the end of regulation after going down the length of the field and Mooney ran it in himself from three yards out to force overtime.
Alfred State scored on the first possession in overtime thanks to a nine-yard rushing touchdown from Palmer.
Dean scored on the next possession as Mooney found Reid for a 22-yard touchdown reception to pull the Bulldogs to within one. Dean kept their offense on the field to go for the win and it paid off as Mooney rolled out and found Jordan Mason who crossed the goal line for the win.
For the Pioneers, quarterback Justin Horvath was 11-29 for 275 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Wide receiver Roman Napoleon led Alfred State in receptions with three for 104 yards and one touchdown.
Pioneers running back Jake Palmer led the running backs with 276 yards and three touchdowns. Alfred State’s running backs as a whole, rushed for 305 yards compared to Dean’s 58.
Dean, 1-6, will be back on the road next Saturday at Maritime College at 2pm when they will look to win two in a row.
