A Manhattan grand jury has officially voted to indict former President Donald Trump, marking a truly historic event in United States history as this is the first time a former president has been indicted. This indictment comes after years of investigations into Trump, some before he even ran for President the first time, but the actual nature of the charges have not been released to the public as they are under seal as of now. What we do know, is that these charges are related to payments made to former adult actress Stormy Daniels to not reveal an affair between the two to the public. One thing is certain, is that this indictment has served to deepen political divides, with the former President’s adversaries claiming justice is finally being served while his allies are saying this is purely motivated by politics.
In the meantime, prosecutors are working towards getting Trump to surrender, which could likely happen early next week. The biggest question remaining is, “what happens now?” Trump is running again for President in 2024 and is looking for a rematch against the incumbent Joe Biden, and while it is unknown if prosecutors are looking for imprisonment should he be convicted, it technically cannot stop him from running.
Without a doubt, this comes at an inopportune time for the former President as not only can this indictment hinder his ambitions at returning to the White House, but the race for the Republican nomination may get complicated, as former vice President Mike Pence and Florida governor Ron DeSantis are likely to challenge Trump for the nomination. No matter what the future holds, this will be a story that the United States will watch closely as it continues to develop.
