Dr. Mehment Oz announced on November 30th he is running as a Republican in the U.S Senate race in Pennsylvania for 2022. He explains his frustration to the New York Times as “arrogant, closed-minded people in charge” in response to schools and businesses shutting down during the pandemic.

As a first-time candidate, his political views by many are unknown. Trip Gabriel from the New York Times explains that Oz entered a G.O.P. field roiled by the recent withdrawal of a candidate endorsed by former President Donald J. Trump, in which most contenders are vying to show their loyalty to the Republican Party’s de facto leader.”

Dr. Mehmet Oz was born in Cleveland, Ohio raised by Turkish immigrants. His motivation for running for Senate increased during the pandemic. He described in an online statement that the way the “elites” handled the pandemic was not right. He further explained in this statement reported by the Washington Examiner that these “elites” as he referred to them, “mandated” policies and “closed our parks, shuttered our schools, shut down our businesses, and took away our freedom.”

It is noted that he appeared on Fox News frequently discussing COVID-19 all while making controversial statements.

In April 2020, he mentioned in a medical journal when it comes to opening schools, it “may only cost us 2 to 3 percent in terms of total mortality.” He later said on Twitter that he “misspoke” in result of the backlash he received.

Republicans in Pennsylvania that what Oz is saying on what he would be due as the U.S Senate for the state is that it sounds promising. Trip Gabriel from the New York Times reported that he would spend large sums of his own fortune, would shake up a field without a front-runner.”

A handful of Republican officials say that voters would take him as a celebrity physician seriously. But some say otherwise. Republican Chairman of Allegheny County Sam DeMarco III stated, “The first thing I asked was, ‘Why are you running? Is this a vanity play?” Sam DeMarco III later made another statement in which he was impressed by Oz’s responses to questions he was asked which was, “My most important goal is to keep this seat in Republican hands come 2022, and I believe Dr. Oz’s entry into the race gives us a significant opportunity to do that.”

While announcing on Tuesday, Nov. 30 about him running, he expressed that he was a “foe” of the elites in response to the outbreak of COVID-19. The New York Times reported that Oz said, “Elites with yards told those without yards to stay inside, where the virus was more likely to spread.” He further said, “We must confront those who want to change the very soul of America and reimagine it with their toxic ideology.”
