Who are you? What is your job title?
Brian M. Quinlan, Director of Student Involvement
Were you involved on campus when you were a student? What made you want to take the next step into leading programs on campus?
I was involved on campus as an undergraduate student. I was a member of the men’s lacrosse team, served as an Orientation Leader, Chair of the Senior Week committee, and my work-study was in the Student Affairs office.
I decided to pursue a career in this field because I have difficulty connecting as a first and only generation college student. Without my experience with the lacrosse team and orientation, I wouldn’t have made it as a college student. Institutional staff went out of their way to show all of the college offerings. Once I found my niche, I found my place and made an impact. I hope to give back to others.
Why do you think it is important for students to get involved on campus? How did getting involved change your college experience?
It is important to get involved on campus for a variety of reasons. One is to separate yourself in the employment market. With over 4,000 degree granting institutions, it’s the life skills acquired through campus leadership experiences that will separate you. In a post COVID world, we have learned that academics can be delivered virtually, but the skills learned within involvement are priceless and will help you socially and professionally. Involvement on campus is also incredibly fun! esports, DAB, dance teams, performing arts, DNN, we have it all!
What is the best way for students to get involved on campus? How does a student go about starting or joining a club?
Students should stop down to the SALD office, on the garden level of the campus center to learn about all involvement opportunities at Dean. We offer dozens of opportunities, and if we don’t offer something that interests you, then our staff can assist you in creating an organization that suits your needs. Academics only take up about forty hours of your week, so let the SALD office help you complete your Dean experience.
Why do you think students should seek out leadership positions on campus?
Student should seek out involvement opportunities to improve their life skills. Some students will acquire leadership skills while others will acquire skills to make things happen on a daily basis.
What makes Dean different from other colleges in terms of student activities?
The Dean SALD office offers unique involvement experiences. Whether it be on one of our six dance teams, serving on the Student Government Association and lobbying for policy change, or programming events, Dean students can improve their student experience.
What changes are you hoping to make here at Dean and how can students help?
I hope to improve the outside-classroom experience for Dean students, while creating equitable policies and protocols institution-wide. I hope to be an advocate for our students in every aspect of their experience.
Any advice for students regarding involvement?
