Based on the book by Shepherd Mead, How to Succeed opened on Broadway for the first time in 1961 at the 46th Street Theatre, now known as the Richard Rodgers Theatre. It ran for 4 years. The original Broadway cast included Robert Morse, Bonnie Scott, Charles Nelson Reilly Rudy Vallée and Virginia Martin. Original songs were written by Frank Loesser and book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert.
This entertaining and comical musical received incredible praise in the performing arts industry, winning two Tony Awards, for Best Musical and Best Book, as well as a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. A movie, based on the musical, was released in 1967, distributed by the United Artists company, with original cast members Morse and Vallée reprising their stage roles.
During future revival performances of the musical, stars such as Daniel Radcliffe (best known for playing Harry Potter in the beloved film franchise) and Nick Jonas have played the main character, the clever J. Pierrepont Finch, the former taking on the main role for the 50th anniversary Broadway production.
The Dean College Production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying will run from March 30th through April 3rd at the main stage, located in the Campus Center. Among the productions amazing cast will be Patrick McKinney as J. Pierrepont Finch, Avery Sullivan as his secretary Rosemary, and Ethan Lazaro as J.B. Biggley, president of the company.
