Inside the Bulldog Huddle - Week 2 Recap

After a fantastic 42-6 Week 1 victory vs Fitchburg State University, we learned that our teammate Errol Breaux had received the New England Football Writers Association (NEFWA) Gold Helmet Award, earned a spot on D3football.com Team of the Week, and was named Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) Offensive Player of the Week.

He collected all these prestigious awards after putting up 251 total yards and 6 total touchdowns in our Week 1 matchup vs Fitchburg State. It was awesome to see Errol accomplish this. He is a great teammate and leader and is truly someone that younger players like me can look up to and learn from. After we celebrated the Week 1 victory, we knew that we would have to work extremely hard all week in preparation for the Week 2 matchup against a much tougher opponent in the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. The Corsairs football team was coming off a victory against a highly respected Husson University team. University of Massachusetts Dartmouth starting quarterback Stephen Gacioch went down with a nasty injury in their first game. However, a less experienced backup quarterback, Dante Aviles-Santos, played exceptionally well and led them to the victory against Husson. Defensively, we knew that we had to try to pressure and rattle the inexperienced quarterback.

We were locked in and had some good practices before the game. We were ready to get on the bus for our first road game of the season.

We were excited when Saturday rolled around. We would finally get the opportunity to make a statement by beating a high-quality opponent. The game started with a 41-yard touchdown pass from the Corsairs’ Aviles-Santos. We quickly answered back when quarterback David Curry ran for a highlight reel 61-yard touchdown. The Corsairs then replied with two long touchdown receptions hauled in by Antonio Brown and Douglas Machado.

We were down 18-7 heading into the second quarter and knew that we absolutely needed to make some stops defensively. We did just that, and our defense shut them out in the second quarter. The scoring started picking up some steam again in the third quarter when the Corsairs took a 24-7 lead with a 1-yard rushing touchdown. David Curry then connected with Jordan Mason on a nice 24-yard touchdown pass to close the deficit to only 10 points. The Corsairs scored another touchdown to end the third quarter. To start the fourth quarter strong, Curry gave us a big momentum booster when he threw a dart to Ki'sean Bullard for a 44-yard touchdown. Machado then caught another touchdown for the Corsairs. Quintus Reid made it a close 36-29 ballgame when he snagged a 13-yard touchdown for us. The Corsairs then closed out the game with two more touchdowns to leave us with a 48-29 final score and our first loss of the season.

Our offense came alive and kept us in the game, but we were just unable to stop the offensive onslaught that the Corsairs put on our defense in the air and on the ground. This game was a very tough pill to swallow. But we must move on. We must pull ourselves up from our bootstraps and try to come back strong next week vs another quality opponent in Husson University.
