Is Going to a Providence Friars Game Worth It?

Ever since I got to college, I've been really fascinated with college sports. The crowd and the energy create a completely different atmosphere than pro sports. This past Wednesday, I had the privilege of taking photos at the Providence Friars' last home game of the season as they took on the DePaul Blue Demons.
For those who don’t know, Providence College is a small liberal arts school located two miles from downtown Providence, Rhode Island. It is the smallest school in the Big East Conference. The Friars play at the Amica Mutual Pavilion, also known as the Providence Civic Center or the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, which opened in 1972.
The venue has hosted various events and is also home to the Boston Bruins' AHL team, the Providence Bruins. Fun fact: the Boston Celtics have played there twice—once in 1972 against the Philadelphia 76ers and again in 2013 in a preseason game against the New York Knicks.
Getting there was something I wasn’t prepared for. If you’re going to a game, the AMP is located in downtown Providence via Interstate 95. I parked in the garage next to the AMP for only $20. The traffic wasn’t bad, I would still advise to arrive accordingly.

In the first half, the Friars came out strong with an 11-6 lead heading into the first media timeout. At one point, they led the game 36-24 before going into halftime up 39-28. Corey Floyd Jr. was on fire in the first half, going 5-for-5 with 12 points.
I want to give a quick shoutout to the Providence Pep Band and the Providence cheer team for doing an outstanding job. They make the fan experience so much better. How can I also forget about Friar Dom the mascot he brought the energy!
The student section was packed! The AMP was filled with not just students, but also with alumni, locals, families, and young fans, despite it being a Wednesday night.
Then, the second half happened, and the Blue Demons flipped the game upside down. They went on a 19-8 run to take the lead, 48-47, with 11 minutes to go. The Friars stayed in it, but toward the end, Bensley Joseph was fouled with seven seconds left. The crowd went crazy as Joseph had a chance to tie the game. However, he came up short, missing three straight free throws.
The Blue Demons picked up the win, 80-77, in the Friars’ final home game of the season.
On the whole, if you ever get the chance, going to a Friars game is worth it. The AMP has a lot of history and a great turnout. The energy in the crowd was amazing. Despite the fact that the AMP is two miles away from campus, Friars fans show up in full force.

Finally, I would like to thank Providence College for allowing me to take photos for this game. I would also like to take a moment to thank any fan or player who asked for a photo—it means a lot to me. I hope to be back in the fall.
