The Nintendo Switch 2 was recently unveiled in a teaser trailer published on the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel. Within the trailer, improvements were made in contrast to the original Switch that I wish to give my thoughts on.
For starters, the stand for the Switch 2 has drastically grown in length; a major improvement compared to the original one. I always had problems with keeping the original console on its feet, as the stand was as sturdy as a twig trying to lift a boulder. With its new length that stretches across the console and ability to flex completely downward, the stand for the Switch 2 will make gameplay comfortability much easier.
Other improvements made to the Switch 2 are the changes made to the joy-cons. For these new controllers, you will be able to clip them on and off with a socket that is built into the Switch. This means that players will no longer need to slide the joy-cons upward to take them out, which sometimes causes them to get stuck on the console.
Another improvement made to the Switch 2 is the playability of the side buttons of each joy-con. On the original Switch, the SL/SR buttons felt a little too small; I had to awkwardly curl my fingers each time I played multiplayer games with a friend, which left them sore after a couple of hours.
For the Switch 2, it seems that the size and space of the buttons have expanded, which is noticeable when comparing the two consoles. This might make it easier to rest your fingers on the joy con, rather than curling them with the smaller buttons. Both changes are major improvements, as they expand on the functionalities of the original console, while also boosting the comfortability of the joy-cons.
The last addition made to the Switch 2 is the colored ring around the movement stick. This could simply be a design feature, but I wonder if the ring was created to reduce joy-con drift. For those who are unaware, joy-con drift was an issue where the movement stick would register motion even while the player was not touching it, causing in-game characters and mechanics to act on their own. This inconvenience would usually be caused by a dust build-up, inside the small hole underneath the movement stick. The new ring around the movement stick seems to cover the hole, which might have been done to prevent dust from getting underneath. If this is what the ring was intended for, Nintendo has my upmost respect.
Overall, the Switch 2 seems like it will become a superior predecessor to the original console. Although there is no official release date, Nintendo stated that the Switch 2 will be available to the public sometime this year.
