Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to attend Dean College’s 2024 Collaboration Showcase at the Guidrey Center. While every performance had its unique charm, I wish to rank my top five favorite performances from the Collaboration Showcase.
For number five, I decided to choose the Fusion Flow Society with their performance of “Caught Up” by Usher. As the first all-inclusive dance club at Dean College, the group exceeded expectations with a short-yet-sweet dance number with impressive hip-hop style footwork. Considering how passionate FFS founder Zach Garsson was for his organization, it was nice to see his team’s hard work pay off.
For number four, I decided to pick the Dean Pom Team with their performance of “Lucky Strike” by Maroon Five. This group lit up the crowd with their upbeat rendition of Cheer Dance, showcasing the true talent of the Pom Team. I was really moved by their goal of reaching the national competition for cheerleading, and I hope they can make it there one day.
For number three, I decided to select the Super Nova dance group with their performance of songs from Whitney Houston, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Janet Jackson, and Maroon 5. As someone who’s highly intrigued by step dancing, it was cool to see all the different styles of tap dancing incorporated into each song the group performed. Additionally, seeing my favorite Maroon 5 song featured in their performance shot this group up the rankings.
For number two, I decided to include the Synergy dance group with their performance of songs from J.I.D, Swizz Beatz, and Nelly. As their name suggests, this group had “Synergy” like almost no other, with each member having clean-and-fancy footwork and incredible group coordination. To be honest, it was really hard to decide whether or not this could top the number one pick I chose for this list.
For number one, I decided to choose My Black Speaks with their performance of songs from multiple hip-hop artists. This group had dance numbers like no other, with each section being more unique and creative than the last one. There were no sad themes, just a group of friends having a great time and busting out the best dance moves they could offer. In my eyes, their performance truly highlighted the talent that Dean has to offer.
All in all, the 2024 Collaboration Showcase had incredible performances that were never boring to watch. Congratulations to all the performers who participated in this event, and I look forward to seeing what next year’s collaboration event brings.
