The 2024 Republican Primaries are quickly becoming even more interesting, as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott have announced they are seeking the 2024 Republican nomination for President. DeSantis has already amassed a large following in his home state of Florida since being reelected in a landslide in 2022, and most polls show him second only to former President Donald Trump in the primaries. Tim Scott was also reelected handily in 2022 but lacks DeSantis’ polling advantage and is starting his campaign in 6th place in hypothetical aggregates, per 538.
Both candidates are popular in their home states and have good name recognition in the Republican Party and should have a chance to separate themselves in the coming months, but as of now, Donald Trump is the clear favorite in polling. Even other candidates like Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy could pose legitimate challenges to DeSantis and Scott as the first debate approaches in August.
While the race for the Republican nomination is already getting crowded, several candidates are eyeing a run, and more decisions will come soon. Those speculated to make a decision within the next month include former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, current New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, and potentially more.
