The Arts vs COVID

Dean College is well known for its many Arts programs. The reason that so many students apply here, is because of the elite dance and musical theatre programs that are offered on campus. Anywhere across campus that you go, you will likely see flyers promoting plays and recitals that students have devoted much of their time and attention towards. With the Coronavirus outbreak happening last March, all students were forced into a virtual environment where they could not perform these shows the way they wanted.

The previous semester has been difficult, with classes being switched to a virtual environment for the Arts programs. Although, there have been difficulties, the arts were able to persevere throughout the semester. Madison Moniz, a dance major believes the dance program was able to be very accommodating during the pandemic. “I think they did really well, they made the curriculum possible in your space, and made a lot of accommodations for the students.”

As for the switch to in person classes, many students across campus not just in the field of arts believe that being in person has helped make activities for class easier. Moniz feels the same way, especially when it comes to in person coaching. “Doing in person classes has been easier, the vibe of everyone in the room helps with learning and it is easier to get feedback from the teachers in person than through a computer”.

The Arts, such as Dance and Musical Theatre, are important in the world. They help clear the mind, expand creativity and improve the body. Without the Arts, many people would not be able to fully express their talent and skills to their fullest potential. Dean has done an excellent job with its programs, and now that they are back in person, the future is looking bright for when the pandemic finally ends.
