In school dining halls, the food can be a hit or miss any day, but there is one thing that often makes people unhappy: the bowls. As a Junior who lives on campus here at Dean College, I have been to the Smith Dining Hall numerous times. There are two types of bowls that Dean has. One bowl that they have is a small soup bowl. You can find this one near the fruits and the soup station. The other one they have is a shallow and small bowl. This one can be found near the cereal dispensers. Having these bowls is making it hard for me and my fellow bulldogs to enjoy a meal.
Let’s talk about the size of the bowls for a moment. They are small, too small for most students to feel full after eating. These bowls just cannot hold enough food. I have also noticed that athletes here tend to eat more to maintain a certain build. They may need a certain number of calories. Because the bowls are so tiny, students must keep getting up and going back for more food. It takes a lot of time and makes it hard to enjoy our meals between classes.
They don’t work well for what students need and that is not fair. Eating should be easy and simple, not a struggle to fit food into a bowl. We have a lot of hardship as students, dining hall bowls should not be added to the list.
These small and shallow bowls can cause more problems than just being annoying. I have also noticed that a lot of students tend to use the dining hall as a chance to take a break and feel relaxed. When there are not enough good bowls to eat from, it makes the meal less enjoyable.
As an attempt to make this issue more seen, I tried to contact Laura Luna who is the catering and retail manager from Sodexo. When I asked her why they had these bowls, she was confused. Her response was “I am not quite sure what bowls you are referring to, as there are different types in the dining hall.” This was confusing to me since there are only two that are in the dining hall so I do not know what other bowls I would be referring to.
In short, the tiny and shallow bowls in the dining hall are not just a little annoying, they show a bigger problem with food service at the school. Fixing this would be an easy way to make eating at school better for everyone. This would turn bad meals into good meals.
