On Tuesday morning, February 23rd, 45-year-old professional golfer Tiger Woods was seriously injured in a rollover car accident. According to a statement from Dr. Anish Mahajan, “Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopedic injuries to his lower right extremity that were treated during emergency surgery”.
Tiger Woods was driving his car in Los Angeles when he crashed off the road, rolling the car over multiple times, landing on its side. The car had severe damage and just from looking at the images of the aftermath, it is noticeable that there were some severe impacts in the accident. When first responders arrived, Woods was trapped inside of his car and the “Jaws of
Life” had to be used to extract him from the wreckage. Doctors decided that Woods would need to be rushed into emergency surgery to relieve pressure from his leg and insert various rods, screws, and pins into his leg and ankle, according to Dr. Anish Mahajan, the acting chief executive of the Harbor-U.C.L.A. Medical Center. After the surgery, Woods was “Awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room”. Tiger has since spoken out after the accident, with a short post to his Twitter, stating “It is hard to explain how touching today was when I turned on the tv and saw all the red shirts. To every golfer and every fan, you are truly helping me get through this tough time”. Several PGA Tour players, including Patrick Reed, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas, wore Tiger’s signature red shirt during the WGC Workday Championship’s final day of competition on Sunday.
Stanford University alumnus Tiger Woods has been playing as a pro on the PGA Tour since 1996, winning 82 career wins on the tour. This includes five wins of the Masters tournament, most recently in his triumphant return in 2019. PGA Tour’s website shows that Woods has earned $120,851,706 in tournament winnings in the PGA Tour alone. Tiger’s success story has given him celebrity status within the world of sports, where he has become a household name to people around the world. Tiger will have to go through a lot to return to competition, but he has done it before and hopefully he can do it again.
