Incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock has narrowly won reelection against Trump-backed challenger and former NFL star Herschel Walker, securing just over 51% of the vote in the Georgia senate runoff. The December 6th runoff was triggered when no candidate received over 50% of the total vote, then the top two candidates (Warnock and Walker) advanced to the runoff.
Warnock’s victory officially gives the Democrats a fifty-one-seat majority in the Senate, which balances congress, given the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives. This victory will help the Democrats as it will make the often-dissenting opinions of Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema hurt a lot less, as a tie will allow Vice President Kamala Harris to vote with the Democrats, securing the majority. However, this doesn’t guarantee an easier path to legislation as House Republicans will not advance President Biden’s agenda without significant compromises.
