In the year 1998, World Kindness Day was formed to promote kindness throughout the world and is celebrated on November 13th. “It is observed in many countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia and the U.A.E. World Kindness Day presents us with the opportunity to reflect upon one of the most important and unifying human principles.” nationaltoday.com
On this day, small and large acts of kindness are made to help many people as a result of all the hatred in the world. The World Kindness Movement explains the meaning behind this day, “to highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us.”
I had the opportunity to ask Dean students what kindness is/ what it means to them. Here’s what they said:
“To me, kindness is helping those who need it the most, especially if they have helped you in the past. Kindness is one of those things you don’t realize till after you have done it or see how it impacts someone’s life.”- (Patrick P.’24)
“Kindness to me means being and doing thoughtful things to everyone not just friends and family, but for people you may not know because that inspires others to do the same which creates a domino effect. And that may save someone’s life or remind someone they matter and do exist in this world that may not always be a happy place.”- (Kati R.’24)
“Kindness means to me showing respect towards others, being a nice and genuine person” - (Frenchesca G.’22)
“To me, kindness means doing random acts of service for people. This can be participating in community service projects or something as simple as holding the door for someone. Even doing the simplest things can make someone’s day without even knowing”- (Kiersten J.’24)
Being kind does not have to be an extravagant thing. It can be something simple as saying hi to a stranger or even smiling at someone. Small random acts of kindness can make the world a better place.
