The Dean Daily Student Newspaper hosted Libertarian Presidential candidate Chase Oliver this past Saturday.

Chase Oliver visited Dean College during his trip through New England on Saturday, October 14th. He took time to socialize with students and faculty and gave a very enlightening speech to those who attended.

Chase’s speech covered four issues that he would address if he became President of the United States. The topics included the student loan crisis, immigration issues, the criminal justice system, and war.

Oliver first mentioned ways to get out of the student loan crisis. He proposed a student loan plan that would make all government student back loans interest-free. He also had the idea of students pitching to banks to allocate money when they decide on their college major. He believes that these ideas will lower the cost of tuition over time and cause less stress about student loans.

Another thing Oliver touched upon was immigration issues. He is very passionate about treating immigrants with compassion because they are people too, who just want to come to America to work and experience “The American Dream. “Immigrants are usually abused and never have the opportunity to seek the help they need due to fear of deportation. Oliver wants the system to be open and to “Let these people out of the shadows.”

Oliver wants to make changes within the criminal justice system as well. He thinks that citizens “should be on a level playing field with the government” when dealing with legal altercations. He also wants to end qualified immunity and believes that all police officers should hold civil liability insurance to protect them, and to establish trust between police and townsfolk.

Finally, Oliver shared his status on war and peace across nations, saying that he is “#antiwartothecore”. He explained that he is deeply saddened by the war in Israel and thinks heavy responses are just going to create more tension.

Oliver is huge on coming together and encouraging peace among nations. He also believes that heavy force is just going to create blowback and will never lead to peace. He says that military response is not always the answer, and that America can be a peaceful country without always relying on those tactics.

After finishing what he had to say, Oliver answered questions from the audience which included concerns about the Ukraine war, the Second Amendment, the War on Drugs, ranked choice voting, taxes, the Federal Reserve, and the Department of Education.

The event was a huge success overall and generated an audience of approximately 40 attendees. Coffee and desserts were served, and people were able to socialize with Oliver after he was done speaking.

After departing Dean, Oliver continued his New England trip stopping in Manchester, New Hampshire, and Portland, Maine, while also making time for leaf peeping and indulging in lobster and chowder.
