Club Spotlight: E-Sports

Updated: Sep 15, 2021

Every club and organization on Dean’s campus took a hit when COVID-19 forced everyone to move to an online environment. It was a difficult time trying to maintain the communities that were built through in-person relationships on campus. One of the clubs that was able to thrive during this time was the E-sports club. Because this is a club all about being in front of a screen, the organization was able to continue hosting events and maintain the interpersonal relationships between the members of the club. The club continued to host different events for students virtually and they made the most of this change to the online environment. The group hosted competitive tournaments with games like Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Super Smash Brothers during their time online. Despite this smooth transition to the online environment, the members of the club are thrilled to be back on campus in person.

Before COVID-19 the club was regularly hosting events with weekly Super Smash Brothers tournaments and had teams for games such as Overwatch and League of Legends. The teams, unfortunately, had to be disbanded when COVID-19 forced everyone online. The members of the teams were unable to schedule practice sessions because of time zone differences with many of the students being international.

Since being back on campus the club has already lined up different events such as a Mario Kart tournament on the 16th of September. The event will run from 7-10 PM in the Atrium. The club is also planning on hosting signups for different team-based video games. Signups for these teams will be available at the involvement fair on the 14th of September. Some of the signups include games such as Overwatch and Call of Duty Warzone.

The current EBoard is looking to recruit students who are interested in leadership positions for the club. Since most of the current Eboard are upperclassmen they are looking for new recruitments. Signups for Eboard positions will be available at the involvement fair. If you are interested in joining in on the clubs' activities they announce all of their events via Instagram @deanesports. They also have a discord where they announce events as well as socialize with the members of the club. The link to join their discord is available here: https://discord.gg/ByhQ6TSb9N.

Overall the club is looking forward to the return of in-person events and to gain new members to their club. The return to an in-person campus allows teams to form and for the expansion of the club to host bigger events than before COVID-19 hit. Make sure to stay tuned to hear about any news regarding E-sports.
