Dean College held Open Mic Night in the Campus Center down in the Atrium on Friday night.

The event was hosted by Dean News Network, a club on campus for students to produce their own video stories in the Digital Media Studios within Dean Hall. Those videos are usually posted on social media and YouTube.

The event had all kinds of activities including karaoke, a raffle for a gift card and lots of food. The food that was served included wings, macaroni and cheese, cookies and mocktails. The crowd enjoyed the variety of serious and fun acts, although as the event went on some people got a little carried away with some inappropriate song choices. However, a good time was had by all.

Open Mic Night is an event that takes place at Dean often, however this event was a little bit different with how it all came together. Usually, events like these are run by people on the student activities committee. In this case, this was DNN’s first time hosting the event because of a little conflict. Event organizer Dylan Thomas explained how this event all came together. “Dean College loves having events, especially when it is the weekend and there are less classes and schoolwork which allows students to focus on having fun. Usually, Open Mic Night happens regularly, but Brian Quinlan and Michelle Frizzle, who both work on SAC, needed a club to host this event and DNN was on the top of their radar.”

There were a lot of performers at the event and a lot of them got a big round of applause from the crowd. However, for freshman Annabel Ross, despite getting a big round of applause from the crowd after performing “Summer Nights” from Grease, she was not impressed with her performance. “I don’t think I did very well because I have a very low voice which makes it hard for people to hear me.” However, Annabel did enjoy the event and was glad that she participated after not participating last time because she could not think of a song that she wanted to sing.

There were also a lot of observers at the event, and they were all enjoying themselves as well. For sophomore Ben Pope, after performing the Phineas and Ferb theme song with his friends Alex Green and Brett Chaves, he explained how he was having a great time at the event. “It’s pretty fun. I wanted to come out and support DNN, which I am a member of.”

Overall, everyone enjoyed the event and there were no complaints as far as with how the event was set up. DNN is looking forward to hosting more events in the future and they say to stay tuned to their social media (@deannewsnetwork) to get more information.
