For the past few months, the Dean College community has been struggling with the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, especially athletics. With fall and winter sports being cancelled this season, there has hardly been any action on the field. However, there has been plenty of action off of the field. The athletic department has been spotlighting numerous athletes, past games, as well as future events. All of these adaptations and successes would not be possible without new Athletic Director George Martin.
Mr. Martin has been a leader in collegiate athletics throughout his entire career. Before Dean, Martin worked as the Athletic Director at Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire. He has overseen the success of multiple sports, including baseball, basketball, and cross country. Martin also served more than 25 seasons as Colby-Sawyer’s women’s basketball coach. In the past 23 seasons of those years, 21 resulted in double-digit win totals. Martin also worked previously at Fitchburg State and Wagner College in New York. Martin’s leadership and success brought his past programs success, and that’s why the staff at Dean wanted him.
“I have every confidence that George Martin is a skilled and effective leader who understands, supports, and will advance the mission, values, and vision of athletics at Dean College,” Dean President Dr. Paula Rooney said in a previous statement.
"I am thankful to all for the opportunity that has been given to me. I am excited to be a Bulldog and begin working with the athletic department, the Dean Community, and most importantly, our students. I am looking forward to being part of the Dean Difference," Martin said when announced to the position this past spring.
Martin is also well-recognized outside of athletics. He recently was a recipient of the 2020 Presidents’ Good Steward Award, presented by Campus Connect for New Hampshire. This award is given to staff members that have gone out of their way to advance public service. Whether it’s on the job or out of the office, George Martin is a true role model to his community.
Martin officially began working as the Athletic Director in April of this year, and he will continue to lead Dean through the challenges of Covid-19.
