Senior Matthew Fischioni is scheduled to graduate from Dean College in May. Fischioni, who prefers to be called “Fish”, is from Brooklyn, New York and chose Dean because of the small campus environment which made it easy to get to classes as well as meet people and make friends. When Matthew arrived at Dean his freshman year, while the experiences were great, adjusting was not easy for him, “The experience at Dean was good as I really enjoyed the activities they had such as Dean After Dark. However, it was also challenging because everything was new, and it took a while to get used to the college experience.” Fish explained that he was both scared and excited at the same time because this was the first time he was away from his family for a long period of time which resulted in him becoming homesick in the beginning. On the other hand, he was excited to be able to meet more people and at the end of the day, when he was able to get used to the college life, he became more comfortable.
Matthew believes that Dean did a great job helping him get to where he is today as he is about to graduate. First, as a Communications major he believes that Dean was able to help him improve his communications skills as well as his social skills as he was a shy and quiet kid who was only focused on doing the best he could in his academics who also wanted to make friends at the same time. He also believes that being at Dean has allowed him to find his passion in filmmaking. He credits this to having an abundance of resources such as the library and academic coaching helping him with time management, which allowed him more time to hang out with friends and focus more on filmmaking. Fischoni’s favorite memory at Dean is by far being a part of Dean News Network because it is something that he loves doing every week and looks forward to when the semester starts and is sad when the semester ends. He is very passionate about his DNN segment “Fish N Chips”, which is where he reviews movies.
Fish believes that Dean has done a great job helping him prepare for internships as they offered courses that went step by step through what it is like to work in different fields such as audio production, digital video production and radio. He believes that this allowed him to try different things which let him decide what he likes and does not like.
Matthew explained that it has been very challenging trying to find a job considering that he is trying to get into a competitive field like production in filmmaking. On top of that, a lot of productions have stopped due to the pandemic. Even though Fish’s main goal is to be behind the camera as either a cameraman or editor in the film industry, he is willing to start small and build his career up from there if necessary. Fischioni is currently in the middle of applying for a job with NFL Films in Southern New Jersey.
Matthew’s advice for freshmen at Dean is to take risks and be yourself, “Take risks even if you are uncomfortable to do it. Secondly, be yourself because you do not want to enter a situation where you act like someone you are not or talk about something you do not like.”
