When the spring semester ends at Dean, learning does not stop. Over the summer, Dean offers summer classes to its students to help them attain more credits for their academic careers. Dean also offers summer camps for broadcasting and science for both current and potential students.
Although the class lasts only two weeks, the course offers its attendees plenty of opportunities. These opportunities include play-by-play broadcasting experience, podcasting, and a trip to the New England Patriots Training Camp. Spots to sign up for this class are limited and can be found here for all current and potential Dean students.
One student who participated in the summer course was rising senior Alex Green. Green took the broadcasting course in the summer of 2020 when the course was virtual, but he feels that there was still plenty to gain from the experience.
Green praised the connections to industry professionals that the broadcasting field provided stating, “The best part of attending the sports broadcasting camp was getting to meet and talk to some professionals in the sports broadcasting industry, getting the chance to hear how they got to the point they’re at and ask them questions was invaluable. Also, getting to meet these professionals gave me a chance to start making connections.”
The connections that Green was able to make with both students and industry professionals were vital to his decision to come to Dean. Although Green had already decided to attend Dean, he was reaffirmed by his experience with the broadcasting camp, which has helped him pursue other opportunities both at and outside of Dean College. Green currently is a member of the Broadcasting team, and serves as Co PR/Marketing Director for Dean News Network, a student organization that has one of the highest member counts of any student organization at Dean College.
“The opportunities the sports broadcasting camp gave me made me feel that Dean was the right place to be. Like I mentioned, getting the chance to meet and talk to some of the professionals in the broadcasting industry allowed me to get advice on how to succeed in the industry. Also, getting the chance to work with and meet Professor Rooke before actually attending Dean gave me a sense of what the other professors at Dean would be like and allowed me to build a report with him.”
Green will soon be entering his senior year at Dean and has learned plenty of valuable skills that have helped him and other students at Dean. With all the opportunities that Dean has provided him and other students, Green offers advice to anyone considering a career in broadcasting, and that is to take advantage of any opportunity put forward to learn new skills and always build strong connections.
“One piece of advice I would give to someone who is thinking about pursuing a broadcasting career is to take advantage of opportunities that come your way. Even if it’s a sport you don’t necessarily like or want to work in, you never know unless you try it. Taking advantage of certain opportunities could also lead to connections that help you secure your dream job later in life.”
