The Smith Dining Center at Dean College. (Dean College)
Need a bite to eat but in a rush? The Smith Dining Center is now offering free-of-charge-to-go boxes for Dean College students.
To participate in the program, simply request an on-the-go container from the receptionist at the front desk of the dining hall. Next, fill it with as much food as you want and take it anywhere. After you finish eating, return it in exchange for a new clean box or claim a green loop redeemable for a clean box at any time.
Sodexo handles all the washing of the containers, although they ask that the boxes are returned as clean as possible.
Should you misplace or lose your to-go container, a new one is offered for five dollars at the front desk. This fee can be paid in cash, debit/credit, or Boomer Bucks. The first container, however, is entirely free.
In just the first few days of the program, employees at the Smith Dining Center have noticed an immediate impact.
"The boxes help students tremendously, especially for those that have other engagements," said May Eisenstadt, a front desk cashier, "They'll be able to take the food and eat outside [the dining hall] instead of having to miss a meal."
The program, seen on many other college campuses, is finally reaching the Dean community. Beyond providing convenience to students, the initiative brings an element of sustainability. Returning the containers reduces plastic and paper waste, adding to a long list of ways Dean is environmentally friendly.
Connor Corbett, a Sophomore exercise science major, is delighted with the update on multiple fronts.
"It's sustainable for the planet and my eating habits. I am excited to try it," he pronounced.
