With Covid-19 cases on the decline, Governors around the country have started to reopen their states. Businesses of all types are reopening and increasing capacity, and some states, mainly in the south, have even started the process of reopening completely. For example, Texas recently announced that they are pretty much going back to normal. Governor Greg Abbott of Texas said Tuesday, “Effective next Wednesday, all businesses of any type are allowed to open one hundred percent. That includes any type of entity in Texas. Also, I am ending the statewide mask mandate.” Governor Abbott believes that with the current Covid-19 data, and residents of his state taking the necessary precautions, state mandates are quote on quote “no longer needed.”
However, many folks around the country believe that Governor Abbott’s decision was a huge mistake. One of those folks being President Joe Biden, who heavily criticized Abbott’s decision. Texas is not the only state to heavily relax restrictions either. In Mississippi, Governor Tate Reeves announced that his state will also reopen completely. With no mask mandates and full capacity at businesses. Masks however will still be required at certain businesses in these states. The ones that continue to require them regardless of the mandate ending as well as the ones where it is not possible to stay socially distant.
President Biden says that this reopening process is “Neanderthal Thinking” and thinks these states are opening up way too early, and while it may be a relief to some businesses to have restrictions dropped, health experts believe that because of these decisions we may see a fourth wave of Covid-19 cases regardless of vaccines being on the horizon.
