Over the past year, the entire world has been quick to adjust to celebrating different holidays in the COVID-19 environment. One of the first holidays to experience this new “virtual” celebration last year was St. Patrick’s Day, near the beginning of the quarantine period in the U.S. Now, we are once again getting our green and gold together to celebrate the day of the Irish once again, but how has celebration in the U.S changed?

While positivity rates remain on the downtick, it’s important to stay precautionary in any activities that you may be taking part in this St. Patrick’s Day or throughout the long weekend! With large numbers of college students coming home for their spring breaks, there are additional concerns that some may be bringing along lingering symptoms of the virus with them. In addition, St. Patrick’s day also adds the extra issue of potential underage drinking, or people getting wasted from extreme drinking being taken to the hospital. These concerns are real, and would be taking away from the already slight resources in local hospitals and treatment centers.

The best thing you can do this St Patrick’s Day is to continue following guidelines being given out by the CDC and in the state you currently reside in. Try to avoid any large gatherings, and make sure all people you interact with are keeping safe and socially distancing! It also should go without saying, but it’s important to acknowledge to stay safe and avoid any alcoholic substances if not at the proper age. Remember to have fun, while keeping yourself and the others around you safe. Keeping these ideas in mind, have fun and enjoy your St. Patrick’s Day weekend!
